Aging whippet/shakey leggs

Postby Wiley coyote's mom » Tue Oct 19, 2004 11:19 pm

Does any of our seniors have shakey back leggs? I asked this once before a while back. Wiley cs back leggs are getting weaker. He runs at night, but he often falls going up stairs, or has trouble with low jump ups. I help him on some of his favorite sleeping places. His back leggs shake so I wish there was somethinf I could do. At this age, 13 would more excersise help at all? They seem so weak, any suggestions?

Our Whippets are relatively young, but our oldest Greyhound, Misty, 13, has very shakey back legs. She can't go up stairs any longer, and even has a hard time stepping up into the house from the front porch or our garage. She's still happy, though. I'm a believer in exercise, but I don't think it will help Misty. She tries to run when the other kids start flying, but she can't go far before she has to lay down. She also has congestive heart failure.

Jack and Blue both have shake in the back legs. Blue more when he gets excited or seems to want to be covered with his binky. I try to walk them a few miles every week and then take the younger girls out for a better workout. Keeps me in shape!!

Devo (14 yrs) will still do a rip thru the yard once or twice a day. Afterward is when his legs will be shakey for 15 to 20 minutes or so, but this has occured since he was 9yrs old when he joined our family. Devo is mostly white and one of our friends said that white dogs of any breed usually have something called "shakey dog syndrome." Has anyone else ever heard of this?

JJ is 11 and has shakey back legs and sometimes the front legs will sort of shake if he's been running hard. It usually only affects the legs he is not putting a lot of weight on.As for "shaley leg syndrome"..... I've never heard of such a thing. But I'm not a vet or breeder.
